What’s Important

There has never been so much communication at this period in history, and never so little understanding. Never before have we had so much information but so little wisdom. We have more of everything nowadays but so little of what is important.

I was thinking the other day about something like this. I hear lots of lamentation about the state of the world, and receive daily exhortations to get involved with this or that good cause. Protest. Give money. Demonstrate. Write letters. Boycott. Get angry. There’s so much to worry about, so much to lament, so much to distract us from LIVING. If we spend our energy on worry, we have little left for paying attention, for being a loving person, for living in the moment. I’m not saying we shouldn’t try to improve things, but I am saying that being an aware, compassionate human being can have a positive effect on people around us, and can have a ripple effect. Or so I am told by my dear Buddhist therapist and mentor, and so I hope.
